Day 10

I love my girls, and I am grateful to have them in my room, but they are so SMELLY… I don’t know what I would have done for 2 more weeks if I hadn’t figured something out. So today was spring cleaning!

Mom and I moved their brooder into the upstairs bathroom. We didn’t bring their heater with them, so their temperature lowered slightly more than was comfortable. But after 20 minutes of them huddling like penguins, we got them back into their nice, cozy little room… that I used to occupy.

That much-needed cleaning was made up of…
1. Opening both windows in my room
2. Turning the fan on as fast as it would go
3. Throwing out the newest bag of chicken trash
4. Vacuuming
5. Moving them into a bigger box
6. Adding a perch

The clear box on top was the box they were in for the first 2 weeks, but they seem to need a little more space. The new and improved blue box was a pain to find. But they now have more room, and their evil plots to fly up, up, and away are delayed! I’m excited, we are 2ish weeks away from moving them out!

My Grandpa Williams came to visit and help us with the chicken coop (which will be mentioned later when we finish building it) While he is here, he is helping me to build a little starting perch for my chicks! They stayed away from the perch at first and seemed to see it as only a weird-shaped block in their space. Then they they started playing under and around it. They are now sleeping on it, or just sitting on it sometimes. I am pretty excited! I have seen so many perfect, edited pictures of 20 adult chickens sleeping on a perch… There is a maximum of 5 out of my 11 chickens on it at one time. Fingers crossed they figure out how to match my vision soon ;D

Here is Amber, falling asleep in my lap! She is the tiniest, and I can see a noticeable difference between her and her sisters’ height. This happened a little after I washed her off. I didn’t expect any of my babies to have pasty butt, but this little one had it… I am worried that I am not a good enough chicken “mommy”. She has had a different experience than any of my other chickies. After about 2 weeks of caring for her especially, she seems to be doing just fine!
